Newark Sixth

Jade Lowe, 18

Jade Lowe

Currently studying: A Levels in Psychology, Sociology and Law.

Next move: applied to study Sociology at Nottingham Trent University.

“I think that deciding to come to college will really help with moving onto university. It’s been like a practice run,”

Says Jade, who has applied to study Psychology at Nottingham Trent University.

Jade found the support she received when completing her university application valuable:

“I was a bit daunted by the process of applying to university - before coming to college I really didn’t know what it would entail.”

“Fortunately, we went through the UCAS application process in detail during our tutorials, so we knew what to expect and how to go about completing the process.”

“The tutors were really supportive when it came to applying to university, particularly when it came to writing our Personal Statement."

"It can be quite hard to write positive things about yourself, but they took the time to read through our individual applications and advise us.”

Xan Downing, 19

Xan Downing

Currently studying: AS Levels History, Geography and Biology.

Next move: A Levels in all above subjects, before moving onto study Archaeology at University.

“Coming to college has given me a second chance,” says Xan, who previously started her A Levels at school, but decided she wanted to be in a more adult environment:

“I’ve been amazed at how different it is to school! It’s a much more adult environment and the teaching facilities are excellent.”

“Studying Biology means I’m taught in the laboratories and they are fantastic! They’re modern, spacious and fully equipped. Most lessons involve lots of practical work, so I really enjoy the ‘hands on’ nature of this course.”

Next year I hope to complete my A Levels before going on to study Archaeology at University.

Jamie Dobbins, 19

Currently studying: A Levels in History, Sociology and Psychology.

Next move: University to study Psychology.

At college we understand the importance of providing individual, tailored support for each student. A Level and former Sir William Robertson High School student, Jamie Dobbins, highlights how students receive support through group and individual tutorials:

“At college you get a Personal tutor who provides extra support outside of your subject lessons."

"Once a week, you meet with a small group of other students and your personal tutor to be briefed on important information and upcoming events.”

“This could include UCAS support and guidance, opportunities to take part in trips and excursions, exam study hints and tips, financing study advice"

“In addition, you have regular one-to-one time with your tutor, so you can discuss things in detail, such as any extra support you may need with completing your coursework, for example.”

Jake Richardson

Studied: National Diploma in Graphic Design

Currently: Glasgow School of Art and Design studying BA (Hons) in Visual Communication

“I got to study a subject I loved – you can’t get much better than that,” says Jake Richardson, former National Diploma in Graphic Design student.

Jake’s time spent at college saw him develop the skills and knowledge which helped secured him a place studying BA (Hons) in Visual Communication at Glasgow School of Art and Design. He even managed to pick up a prestigious industry award along the way…

“I won a competition to have my work featured in the Association of Illustrators annual – which is an incredible boost. It’s a highly regarded publication in the illustration world, so I’m delighted,” says Jake.

“There are some really prestigious competitions you can enter – my tutor, Helen Mather, was great at encouraging us to go for them!”

Jake developed a passion for Graphic Design whilst studying it at St Peter and St Paul’s school and quickly decided he’d like to study it further:

“I started looking at courses I could do after my GCSEs and the National Diploma at college really stood out – and I wasn’t disappointed!”

“I really enjoyed that we could bounce ideas of each other as a class and having creative discussions. It challenged our ideas and definitely got the best out of us.”

“A mix of computer based design, practical design using a variety of materials and relevant theory made the course diverse. Personally, I found learning about the theory and psychology behind design really interesting.”

“So much of what I’m learning about now builds on what I was taught at college, which is proving really beneficial,” adds Jake.

“I’m really glad I went to college. The course I chose enabled me to spend 100% of my time doing something I loved.”

Abbie Moore

Abbie Moore

Abbie attended Tuxford School and is now studying A Levels in Sociology, Psychology and English Language

Abbie chose to come to Newark Sixth after seeing the newly revamped centre and has not regretted her decision.

“I think it’s brilliant here, there are lots of computers and it’s just really nice” she said.

“At school you are seen as that year 7 kid that grew up there, but here you are treated as an adult.”

Once Abbie has completed her A Levels she hopes to go on to become a Primary School Teacher.

Rhian Whitehead

Rhian Whitehead

Rhian went to The Grove School and is now studying A Levels in Geography, Psychology and Art.

Rhian wanted a new experience from school and that was the deciding factor for her to come to Newark Sixth.

“I have been getting to know new friends and teaching staff and I’m really enjoying it” she said.

“A lot is expected of us but you get to wear what you want and are treated as an adult.”

Rhian wants to go to university and study Geography when she leaves college.
