Newark Sixth

Ofsted considered this area of work to be ‘outstanding’ at our last inspection.

We offer excellent support and guidance to students through our team of personal tutors.

  • Each student is allocated a personal tutor, whom they meet regularly on a one-to-one basis.
  • Personal tutors also keep in touch with the student’s parents/guardians
  • Reports are also sent home on request.
  • Students attend a weekly group session with the tutor
  • Our ‘peer mentoring’ scheme pairs experienced and successful A2 students with AS newcomers, so that (often hard-fought ) experience can be passed on.
  • Second year students intending to go on to Higher Education get advice and support on completing the UCAS application process
  • We partner with University of Lincoln’s ‘Bridge’ Programme to offer Master Classes and support for university applicants
  • Bishop Grosseteste University College invite our students to participate in their ‘Next Steps’ programme.
  • Each student has an ‘Electronic Individual Learning Plan’ (eILP). This is an electronic record of progress onto which subject tutors, personal tutors and students can enter comments, targets and the results of work.

Students can also draw on the specialist knowledge of the college’s Student Services team.

Our staff are expert in personal welfare, health advice and helping students with conditions such as dyslexia, other learning difficulties or disabilities. Extensive support can be provided, which is often more appropriate than that which students receive at school. Exam concessions can be applied for, specialist equipment provided on loan and students can access a professional counselling team and advice and support for many personal problems.

The Student Services Unit also has the prestigious Matrix and Charter Mark awards for Career Advice and Guidance.
Advice is available on financial support, for example EMA and transport support.
